"The reason I love working with Jacqueline Durran (the costumer also for Pride & Prejudice and Atonement) is she works from a character base, and everything is full of symbolism. We viewed Anna as a bird trapped in a cage. Her veils and corsets are like cages. Anna wore fur and for me it signified that she was suffocating herself in dead skin, trapping herself, making her own cage. She wears diamonds, the hardest stone that could cut her throat at any second. We wanted sex to be part of the symbolism as well, so a lot of the dresses were based on a lingerie idea with bed lace poking out. We used bed-linen fabric in one of the dresses to keep that post-coital vibe in it. The last dress Anna is seen in was based on a couple of paintings we studied of the fall of the Whore of Babylon.”

"I’d like to think this isn’t weakness or evasion, but a final act of kindness. I gave them their happiness."
“Steps were heard at the door, and Princess Betsy, knowing it was Madame Karenina, glanced at Vronsky. He was looking toward the door, and his face wore a strange new expression. Joyfully, intently, and at the same time timidly, he gazed at the approaching figure, and slowly he rose to his feet.” - Anna Karenina
What happens next is not an accident. It is too well executed to be spontaneous, because it happens in complete unison. Every person in the crowd presses the three middle fingers of their left hand against their lips and extends them to me. It’s our sign from District 12, the last goodbye I gave Rue in the arena.

“Somewhere inside me is a merciful, forgiving person. Somewhere there is a girl who tries to understand what people are going through, who accepts that people do evil things and that desperation leads them to darker places than they ever imagined.
But if I saw her, I wouldn’t recognize her.”
