| wildeolivias sent: how do you feel about Dair?:) |
I can say straight away I don’t like them romantically. I don’t think they work together, and I really don’t think Blair cares about him that way.
This said, I loved their interactions last season. Minus the kiss and the embarrassing aftermath, I really liked their scenes! All that bickering, it was funny. It made sense… they overcame their prejudices about each other, they’ve come to respect each other in a new way, found an “intellectual” connection (which was believable, of course) and all. So, yeah… I do like them as “intellectual” friends who share interests that nobody else has amongst their mutual friends.
But that’s it. In season 5 all they’ve shared are this… mushy scenes where she’s crying for help and he’s there to hug her or drive her somewhere, lol. All their interactions this season were about how she goes to him for help and how he silently agrees to do everything he can putting aside his feelings for her. I’m tired of Blair desperately needing someone at her side because she can’t stand on her own anymore. And as much as I don’t care about Dan, everything they talk about when they’re together (in S5) is Blair. I can’t recall the most recent conversation they had that wasn’t about Blair and her wedding woes. Not one. It’s like Dan isn’t even a human being when they’re together… he’s just the friendly butler she goes to because *apparently* (not even her best friend, according to the writers) he’s the only one who understands her (since yesterday, basically). I just don’t like how she just uses him and I really can’t see the cute/fluffy side of it. It’s not a real “connection” anymore, she goes to him when she needs something. She didn’t talk to him ALL Summer between S4 and S5, but when no one was in New York to help her run away, she didn’t hesitate to go to him. He was all starry-eyed and in love and she was like “I need a ride” XD then he was the only one in the church she could trust, then he needed to hide her secret pregnancy, then he wrote the book and she didn’t even care to read it, then she cut him out of her life again (he wasn’t even invited to her wedding shower… sure Serena was in charge of the invitations, but Blair must have realised her “supposed” best friend wasn’t there?), then she went back to needing him because he has a house in Brooklyn and she was running from the paps, then he was her confidant again for the whole vow-to-God storyline (which didn’t make any sense. I still can’t understand how Blair went to him and not to Serena. Even if you ship Dair and I can totally understand crying and fangirling over your ship getting together, but why Serena suddenly means less than Dan to her? Is there a reason? What happened?), then she needed another ride… and here comes Dan again.
Basically, I can’t remember the last time Dan actively participated/had a part in a Dair conversation that wasn’t about Blair and him being just there for “interest”/comfort.
Well, actually every single dynamic involving Blair was one-sided this season. She goes to Dan and I *think* she knows he’s in love with her (or they’ll make her even more stupid and just decide she didn’t realise), but still doesn’t care if she troubles him. She kept Louis around her even when she was kissing, circling around Chuck, not caring what he actually was feeling (and then he turned out a psycho! I mean, she doesn’t deserve to be abused, but *maybe* you could have seen this one coming after everything you did to him!). And well, yes, she keeps pushing Chuck away… she has a reason for that, but I still don’t think it makes sense. (And I think he has a say in their relationship…)
I got taken away, lol XD Anyway, I like Dair when it comes to their “intellectual” friendship. I wish we could go back to see them arguing in their own, funny away or finally have a real conversation where Dan isn’t just a prop standing there ready to be hugged. I don’t like them romantically and I don’t like what they’ve done with them this season in general.
I’m not worried they’ll be endgame or anything. Maybe something *will* happen (or maybe it’ll be S4 all over again, I wouldn’t be surprised), but at this point, after all the ridiculous things that happened, I don’t mind. I just hope to do some damage control before the Chair ending (: hoping to see the *real* Blair making an appearence, eventually.

★ How I feel about this character: at the very beginning of the show, Dan was my favorite character. True story. I thought he was the only normal person among them all, and I found him cute most of the time. I liked him throughout the first season, and then he started to annoy me. I think he feels “morally superior” to the Upper East Siders, which may have been true at the beginning, but he also secretly, desperately wants to be part of them. He criticises and admires them at the same time, which didn’t really work for me after the first season. He blames them for the plots and schemes, but most of the times he ends up plotting and scheming with or against them. I think he’s a bit of a hypocrite. He blames Serena for all the lies and promiscuity, and then he goes off to entertain two girls at the same time, without them knowing it, lol. He actually thinks of selling Chuck’s story to the papers (twice) going against all his principles. He tricks Blair when she asks for help in winning Chuck back, because for some reason he doesn’t really think that someone like Blair could be in love. I didn’t even like how he was 100% convinced Blair got the internship at W just because she was Blair Waldorf. And I never really understood the way he and Nate have let Serena treat them. The way they ALWAYS go back to her, no matter how badly and carelessly she treats them with the whole “I don’t know who I’m gonna choose” thing. I just don’t have an opinion about him right now. I mostly don’t care about him. Granted that the writers never really gave him a decent storyline after the first season: it’s not like they did him any kind of favor…
★ All the people I ship romantically with this character: the only couple involving him that I’ve ever really shipped is Dan/Serena. I think they’re endgame, but I don’t know if I would enjoy them as a couple as much as I did back in the first season.
★ My non-romantic OTP for this character: as I said, I like his friendship with Blair. I think it’ll help them both to overcome all the prejudices they have about each other’s world. I used to like his interactions with Nate too, back in the second season.
★ My unpopular opinion about this character: I don’t know if it counts, but I don’t find Penn attractive at all.
★ One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: I really like brother/sister dynamics, so I guess I would have liked to see more of him and Jenny together.
“With you, she was always caught up in schemes and takedowns, but that’s not really her. She’s intelligent, she’s intuitive. You know, she weeps when she watches Nights of Cabiria. If Blair’s happy, then maybe you should let her be.”

Ok, so…

47 DAYS OF CHAIR;
(32)Favorite friendship between Blair and another character
dan: now what’s so urgent?
blair: i wanted to tell you… that you were right… about that thing.
dan: and now which thing is that?
blair: i, blair waldorf, need dan humphrey’s help.
dan: “as my friend and peer, not as an underling”.
blair: as my friend and peer, not my underling.
I just wanted to make a different choice other than the obvious Blair/Serena friendship (which I enjoy as well). Despite the fact that I don’t think these two have any sexual tension at all (sorry, just can’t see it, or feel it or whatever), I do love their scenes together as friends. I feel like they could both teach each other a lot of things, let each other know more about their respective worlds, which they’re so full of prejudices about. I love and enjoy their “frenemies” status. It perfectly works for them, imo. Blair even manages to make Dan an interesting character; their interactions are always witty and fun. I like that they’re both gonna put their differences aside to help a friend in need (usually Serena). That’s why I’m gonna go with Blair and Dan, hoping that whatever happens between the two of them, they’ll keep being friends, because I think they need someone like each other to grow up and keep an open mind.

Dan - “Do you know how many gloves I’ve lost in the subway?”
Blair - “Well you do often seem cursed”.

Dan: I’m Serena’s brother— or stepbrother, technically, which I do mostly try to put out of my mind, seeing as we dated pretty seriously…
Blair: Humphrey, they treat people in here for less serious complexes than that. Do you wanna get committed?
